Jak elegancko przetrwać upały?

The struggle is real!

Greece, Italy, Spain, Poland – they all have one thing in common lately – the unbearable heat, that is present from the early morning until the very end of the day. It doesn’t matter if you like summer or not, we are all fighting for survival these last weeks.

Grecja, Włochy, Hiszpania, Polska – ostatnio łączy je jedno, czyli niesamowity żar lejący się z nieba, od rana do wieczora. Nie ma znaczenia, czy lubisz lato czy nie – wszyscy walczymy o przetrwanie przez te ostatnie kilka tygodni.

Do you work in the office? That’s even worse, as you need to wear that navy suit in 35 degrees… But do you, really? Is there a way to survive the heat without sacrificing your health or even worse – your elegance? Of course there is, let me show it to you!

Pracujesz w biurze? Jeszcze gorzej! Prawdopodobnie musisz nosić ten granatowy garnitur w 35 stopniach… Ale czy na pewno?  A może jest inna droga na przetrwanie upałów, bez szwanku na zdrowiu i – co najważniejsze, bez poświęcania elegancji? Oczywiście, że jest!

Fabrics

That navy office suit is probably 100% wool, super 110’s or better a 180’s. I know how it works, I’ve worked in the corpoworld, in the fancy skyscrapper with a fancy job title. If you wish to survive the heat, you need to start looking at different fabrics!

Twój granatowy garnitur biurowy to zapewne 100% wełna, super 110’s albo lepiej – 180’s. Wiem jak to działa, pracowałem w korpo w wysokim wieżowcu z prestiżowym tytułem na wizytówce. Jeśli chcesz przetrwać upały, musisz zacząć zwracać uwagę na tkaniny.

Linen is what you need, because of its properties. It has the ability to absorb and loose water rapidly and can absorb more moisture before it feels unpleasantly dump, sticking to the skin – like cotton for example. Open weave will also allow air to circulate better than in other fabrics. In other words – it makes you feel that gentle wind on your body, cooling you a little bit more.

Len jest tym, czego szukasz. Ma genialne właściwości termiczne, ponadto absorbuje i oddaje wodę błyskawicznie. Dzięki temu odprowadza pot, zanim stanie się nieprzyjemną mokrą szmatą, klejącą się do Twoich pleców – jak bawełna. Otwarty splot pozwoli na polepszoną cyrkulację powietrza w stosunku do innych tkanin.

Shirts you should also rethink. You should be looking at linen only, or linen-cotton fabrics. The last one wrinkles less, keeping the good properties mentioned before at the same time. Pants? I prefer clean linen, it has that rusty look with small slubs, especially if it’s thicker than usual. But that is totally up to you!

Koszule też musisz ugryźć inaczej. Szukaj takich z tkanin lnianych lub mieszanek bawełniano-lnianych. Te ostatnie będą się mniej gniotły, a zachowają dobre cechy lnu, które docenisz bardzo szybko. Spodnie? Ja uwielbiam te w 100% z lnu, najlepiej mocno roboczego i twardego, z drobnymi “supełkami” w strukturze. Kwestia gustu! 

I myself love linen jacket blends containing cotton and silk – it is an extremely comfortable mix, but also feels more luxurious than linen only. It was my choice for the green checked jacket you can see below. It’s a made to measure Davide jacket for summer – I made it with unconstructed shoulders and totally unlined. 

Ja osobiście uwielbiam marynarkowe mixy lnu z jedwabiem i bawełną – są bardzo przyjemne w dotyku, zdecydowanie bardziej luksusowe niż czysty len. Właśnie taką tkaninę wybrałem na letnią marynarkę szytą na miarę w Davide – bez wypełnienia ramion, z delikatnie naddanym rękawem i zupełnie bez podszewki.

Construction and fitting

When it comes to the fitting and construction of the perfect summer jacket, you need to focus on two words – unconstructed and unlined. You don’t want it to be too heavy with big padded shoulders, they will decrease your comfort and canvas might feel too thick. Unlined jackets or halflined jackets have less lining on the back  (or no at all) and are therefore better for the heat. 

Jeśli chodzi o krój i konstrukcje idealnej letniej marynarki, skup się na dwóch rzeczach – bez konstrukcji i bez podszewki. Nie chcesz, żeby marynarka była zbyt ciężka przez poduszki w ramionach (poza tym, wyglądają tragicznie…) i zbyt masywne wypełnienie, bo nie będzie komfortowa przy wysokich temperaturach. Natomiast marynarka bez podszewki będzie cieńsza o jedną warstwę jedwabiu, dzięki czemu będzie bardziej przewiewna i po prostu przyjemniejsza na gorące dni.

The fitting of the shirts and pants is up for a discussion… Some people prefer it more loose to have more space for the ventilattion, but in my opinion it doesn’t really change much and the sacrifice of the look is not worth it. Go for a slim fitting as usual, preferably made to measure and stay elegant!

Krój koszul i spodni zawsze wzbudza dyskusję. Niektórzy wolą luźniejsze na lato, twierdząc, że więcej miejsca między tkaniną, a ciałem daje lepszą wentylację. Moim zdaniem różnice są znikome, dlatego nie ma potrzeby poświęcać finalnego efektu! Najlepiej wybierać więc koszule slimowane, dopasowane do ciała (komfortowo), a idealnie – szyte na miarę.

Socks or no socks? – W skarpetkach czy bez?

The answear is: socks always! But use the invisible ones, if you can, there is nothing worse than sweating feet in your new, expensive shoes… If you can’t go sockless, I suggest using cotton only for summer.

Odpowiedź brzmi – zawsze noś skarpetki! W lecie zakładaj niewidoczne stopki – nie ma nic gorszego, niż spocone stopy w bezpośrednim kontakcie z Twoimi drogimi butami… Jeśli sytuacja wymaga skarpet, sugeruję bawełniane na lato.

How to do it better – Jak zrobić to lepiej?

If you can allow yourself to divert from the office canons and dress codes, I suggest paring summer sets with nice, fresh coloured accessories. They can really stand out and show your own approach to style and they can finish every outfit just nicely.

Remember not to overdo it! Match everything wisely. I decided to use set of a Kiton pochette and a sevenfold silk Kiton tie. I absolutely love for the quality and the patterns. You can’t find it anywhere else, really.

Jeśli możesz sobie pozwolić na odrobinę szaleństwa względem dress code’u lub kanonów przyjętych w biurze, dorzuć coś świeżego i kolorowego do Twojego stylu. Akcesoria nie tylko sprawiają, że Twój ubiór wygląda kompletnie, ale pozwalają na więcej indywidualizmu w stylizacjach.

Pamiętaj o umiarze, łącz kolory mądrze. Ja wybrałem zestaw Kiton – poszetka i jedwabny krawat sevenfold, które uwielbiam za jakość i wzory. Wykonanie jest na niesamowitym poziomie.

Ultimate solution – ostateczne rozwiązanie

Everything I suggested works just fine, when you need to go to the office and have no other choice. But there is no better solution for summer heat than airconditioned home, car and office… 

Wszystko, co sugeruję to dobre rozwiązania, które stosuję sam. Jeśli mimo wysokich temperatur chcesz lub musisz wyglądać elegancko, na pewno Ci się przydadzą. Ale nie ma nic lepszego, niż klimatyzacja w domu, pracy, samochodzie…

Final thoughts – Podsumowanie

If you are here, it means that no matter the heat you want to stay classy. Bravo for that! I am worrying about your health, therefore you need to keep in mind the forementioned tips for staying cool and elegant during hot days.

Remember – linen is your friend, and blends with silk and cotton are even better for you. Stay in the shadow and hydrate a lot. But above everything – stay elegant and put on a smile, there is nothing better!
