What is a power suit, you should probably already know by now, if your intrest in men’s elegance has been fed for some time, or you have ben watching latest Hollywood productions like The Wolf of Wall Street or a series called The Suits. If not, well, let me bring it to your attention!

Co to jest power suit (zwany również potęgarnitur) powinniście już wiedzieć, jeśli Wasze zainteresowanie męską elegancją karmi się od jakiegoś czasu. Prawdopodobnie widzieliście go również wielokrotnie na wielkim ekranie, w takich superprodukcjach jak Wilk z Wall Street, czy serial The Suits. Jeśli nie – pozwólcie, że Wam go zaprezentuję.

A power suit is a piece of garment that for the past years has been present in the fashion and classic elegance. It seems to me, that a boom for this incredible clothing has been started in the 80’s… Even though power suits can be seen very often on the streets and in the movies nowadays, most people have no idea what is the story behind them.

Why is it called a power suit, and how does one wear a power suit correctly? If you are as curious as I were when preparing this article – read on!

Power suit to element garderoby, który przez ostatnie lata był bardzo widoczny w świecie mody i klasycznej elegancji. Wydaje mi się, że jego popularność zrodziła się w latach 80tych… Chociaż jest aktualnie często spotykanym ubraniem na ulicach, w biurach lub w kinematografii, wiekszość ludzi nie ma zielonego pojęcia jaka jest jego historia.

Dlaczego jest nazywany garniturem mocy? Jak go nosić? Jeśli jesteście tak samo zainteresowani jak ja, gdy szykowałem ten wpis – miłej lektury!

The story begins…

The story begins in Great Britain in the late XIXth and early XXth century. Pinstripe / chalkstripe suits have been popular among certain businessmen, working in banking and financial departments.

Back then, a striped suit was just a striped suit – one of many fabric patterns that men used to wear. It has quickly gained a particular interest of men in GB. One of the most famous pinstripe wearers of these times that we can name, are Edward VIII – the Prince of Wales and Winston Churchil.

Historia zaczyna się w Wielkiej Brytani, pod koniec XIX i na początku XX wieku. Garnitury w paski (nie wiem, jak rozróżnić po polsku pinstripe od chalkstripe…) były popularne w specyficznych kręgach biznesowych, związanych z bankowością i światem finansowych kancelarii.

Wtedy, garnitur w paski był tylko garniturem w paski – jednym z wielu wzorów, jaki mężczyźni wybierali na swoje garnitury. Zyskał on jednak szybkie zainteresowanie mężczyzn w Wielkiej Brytanii. Najbardziej znani posiadacze wspomnianych, to Edward VIII – Ksiaże Walii oraz Winston Churchil.

Just a striped suit

In the late 20’s, the pinstripe hype has been transfered to America – so hungry of the European influence and overseas fashion. It has been adopted by many gentlemen of that time: Humphrey Bogart, Clark Gable, Cary Grant and later by Frank Sinatra and Al Capone (a gentleman only by his attire). You can see them rocking striped suits of all kinds, every guy on his own terms, coherent with his own style.

W późnych latach 20tych, popularność garniturów w paski przeniosła się do Stanów Zjednoczonych – wtedy tak głodnych zamorskiej mody i elegancji. Został on zaadoptowany przez takich gentlemanów jak Humphrey Bogart, Clark Gable czy Cary Grant. Później dołączyli do nich Frank Sinatra i Al Capone (gentleman tylko z wyglądu). Każdy z nich nosił garnitur w prążek na swój sposób, zgodny z własnym, niepowtarzalnym stylem. 

It is important to state, that at that time striped suit was just a striped suit. The suit has evolved to a so called power suit in the 80’s. And it has been first (most probably) introduced by Giorgio Armani, in the updated form. So what has been altered? Why was it called a power suit?

Armani has made the shoulder in the pinstripe suit constructed with a huge padding. It has been on purpose blown out of proportions. Compared to the previous, more Italian shoulders we can see on before mentioned “gentlemen”, the power suit has been really overdrawn. Results? A more maschuline, or even a macho look. A confidence, hidden in perfectly cut, striped suit. A power, cloaked by the master tailor’s careful work. A power suit.

Warto tutaj zaznaczyć, że w tamtych czasach garnitur w prążki był codziennym wzorem. To właśnie w latach 80tych ewoluował on w power suit. Prawdopodobnie można uznać, że momentem przełomowym było wprowadzenie przez Giorgio Armaniego “odświeżonej” wersji. Co to właściwie znaczy? Czemu został nazwany power suit?

Armani zaprezentował garnitur z ogromnym wypełnieniem ramion. Został wytrącony z proporcji przekornie i z premedytacją, szczególnie stawiając go w opozycji do lekkich włoskich ramion. Efekt? Bardziej męski, masywny wygląd. Pewność siebie, ukryta w idelnie skrojonym, prążkowanym garniturze. Siła, wykrzesana przez sprawną igłę krawca. Prawdziwy power suit. 

But a power suit would be nothing without the accessories, that made the power look complete.

It is also very interesting, that the power look can be assigned to a certain precursor, a famous actor and designer of men’s clothing. It was in the 1987, when the movie “Wall Street” had its premiere. Alan Flusser is entirely responsible for creating the costumes in the movie.

What really is fascinating, is that when we watch the movie today, the costumes seem very familair. It all goes down to inspiration. Flusser – inspired by the power suit, style of financial workers, created an overdrawn image of the financial shark (Gordon Gekko in the “Wall Street”). He wears pinstripe suits, accompanied by striped shirts with white cuffs and a collar, and super visible geometrically patterned ties. The accessories are also what made him look the way he did – a powerful and influential individual.

To również bardzo interesujące, że tzw. power look można przypisać do konkretnego prekursora, znanego aktora i projektanta męskich ubrań. To właśnie rok 1987, gdy premierę miał film “Wall Street” można uznać za początek power look’u. Kostiumy do filmu zostały w całości stworzone przez Alana Flussera.

To co jest na prawdę fascynujące to to, że oglądając film dzisiaj, filmowe kostiumy są bardzo łatwo rozpoznawalne. Wszystko sprowadza się do inspiracji. Flusser, zainspirowany ideą power suit, stylem pracowników bankowych i finansowych stworzył przerysowany wygląd rekina finansowego (Gordon Gekko w “Wall Street”) na cele filmu. Gordon nosi garnitury w paski, koszule z białymi kołnierzykami (maklerki) oraz bardzo wyraziste krawaty i poszetki, najczęściej we wzory geometryczne. Akcesoria są właśnie tym, co sprawia że jego zestawy są kompletne i dają prosty przekaz – Gekko jest mocnym osobnikiem. 

Few years later, what was created as an overdrawn image of Wall Street Businessman, has become a style icon… Power suit has been welcomed very warmly in the beginning of XXIst century, quickly becoming a style for rich, powerful and influential people. With a raise of menswear and elegance blogs, the famous pinstripe has been again refreshed. Less padding, more tailored fit, big lapel, shorter and slimmer trousers – all of this, in the name of presenting yet again, a powerful look. In my opinion – the results are super powerful!

Kilka lat później, to co zostało stworzone jako przerysowany wizerunek wilka z Wall Street, stało się ikoną stylu i atrybutem pracowników bankowych. Power suit został przyjęty bardzo ciepło na początku XXI wieku, stając się ubraniem dla bogatych, wpływowych i silnych jednostek. Wraz ze wzrostem popularności blogów na temat męskiej elegancji, power look został ponownie odświeżony. Wersja z tego wieku to dużo lżejsze ramiona, lepiej dopasowany krój, duże klapy, krótsze i węższe spodnie wykończone na mankiet. Wszystko po to, aby po raz kolejny zaprezentować power look. A w moim odczuciu, efekty są nawet lepsze niż wcześniej!

Fashion or classic?

It really is a good question. Are power suits just a trend, that will be gone in few years just like it was in the beginning of 2000’s? In my opinion – no, not this time. Men’s elegance is growing very strong, and I believe that it will become more that just a subculture of a very well dressed men.

In the coming years, the principles and rules of looking good in a suit will affect the everydays look of young and aspiring men. Not only will being dapper be a domain of enthusiasts and freaks, but anyone wearing a suit will follow the set of rules and guides.

And as long as men are wearing suits to work, in their free time or solely for fun – power suits will be a classic item every man should own and wear every once in a while. If you are still asking yourself a question “Am I powerful enough?” – ask no more. Pinstripe requires a high amount of self confidence to be worn with class, but it can boost your ego even more!

To dobre pytanie. Czy power suit to tylko trend, który znów przeminie? Moim zdaniem – nie, nie tym razem. Męska elegancja rośnie w siłę, według mnie stanie się czymś więcej, niż tylko subkulturą dobrze ubranych chłopaków. W nadchodzących latach zasady męskiej elegancji i tego, jak wyglądać dobrze w garniturze będą przenikały do codzienności i inspirowały więcej ludzi. Bycie eleganckim nie będzie tylko domeną entuzjastów, a zasady i reguły będą przestrzegane przez każdego, kto nosi garnitur.

A tak długo, jak mężczyźni będą nosić garnitury do pracy, w wolnym czasie lub po prostu dla przyjemności – power suit będzie klasycznym elementem garderoby, który po prostu warto mieć i nosić raz na jakiś czas. Jeśli wciaż zadajesz sobie pytanie, czy masz wystarczającą pewność w sobie, aby nosić potęgarnitur – nie pytaj więcej. Power suit wymaga odpowiedniego poczucia własnej wartości, ale noszenie go, daje niesamowitego kopa!
